Whistleblower Issue #2

Matt/Jan demand Renae approve of an illegal raise to cover healthcare premiums and state retirement contribution to an employee who had already quit the year before and was working part-time, because for some reason no one is allowed to quit the SDIC even if they don’t want to be there anymore.

  • State policy is that part-time employees are not entitled to benefits (Permanent reduced work schedule).

  • This raise would amount to paying part-time employees more per hour than full-time employees, which had become a common practice at the SDIC but Renae was trying to stop that practice because it was creating bad morale amongst the full-time employees.

  • Matt had never asked Renae to approve anyone else’s pay before.

  • There was a previous employee that had quit and went part-time. Matt/Jan/Renae all agreed to a proper pay ratio for that person to go part-time, but Matt decided to give that part-time employee more per hour to cover benefits also without telling Renae at all about that until staff started complaining to Renae that part-time employees are getting paid more per hour than the full-time employees.

  • Matt was creating a strong incentive for the staff to quit and go part-time.

  • This employee would eventually quit for real, because she finally made a stand in refusing to be treated the way SDIC management treats people with lies, disrespect and double-crosses. Renae admired her for that and she would be an inspiration for Renae to make her stand later.
